Job Description:

Under the supervision and direction of Director of Clinical Services, the Substance Use Disorder (SUD) Counselor II will provide a variety of alcohol and drug treatment services. The SUD Counselor II will ensure proper and ethical documentation for the alcohol and drug treatment program. Facilitate client's treatment issues and progress while guiding them through each phase of treatment which includes conducting process groups, education, behavioral interventions, work in coordination with shared agencies, i.e. medical, mental health, Kings County probation and parole, etc.  

The Counselor II will be in compliance with state and federal laws and regulations, in addition to the Policies & Procedures set-forth by Champions. Ensure compliance with state and federal laws and regulations, in addition to the Policies & Procedures set-forth by Champions and maintain appropriate documentation within the electronic client records; which includes the use of an EHR system. Furthermore, work collaboratively with all divisions and provide integrative treatment services, as well as individual and Psychoeducational groups and classes as deemed appropriate.


  • BA in social work, psychology, or related field + 2 years’ mental health experience; or AA in social work, psychology, or related field + 3 years’ mental health experience and/or other relevant degree(s) and related experience may be substituted.
  • Two (2) years of advanced education (60 units of college credit) in psychology, sociology, or a closely related field is preferred.
  • Must have valid California Class C Driver’s License; maintain a good safety record (verified by DMV at hire and periodically) and a reliable vehicle; proof of liability insurance if driving personal vehicle.  
  • First Aid and CPR certifications, obtain within 90 days of employment and maintain current thereafter.
  •  Experience must be in the provision of case management services for persons living with mental illness. 
  • Substance Abuse counseling/support experience desired.
  • Experience with culturally diverse population.
  • Ability to understand and interpret information, follow instructions and manage workflow.
  • Strong Interpersonal skills; ability to work effectively with people in a constructive manner within a community-based treatment setting.
  • Basic management practices and operating procedures.
  • Able to multi-task in a fast paced environment, apply professional judgement in solving difficult issues, and to communicate in a clear, precise and professional manner.
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish speaking) preferred.  
  • Criminal background clearance required.
  • Recovering individuals must have a minimum two years clean, sober and abstinent to be considered for employment.

Certifications / Requirements:

  • Possession of a valid Certification in Alcohol and Drug Counseling (CADC-I, CADC II, LAADC) or Addiction Services (RADT) as recognized by the State of California. 
  • Drug and Alcohol or related certification and American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) Trained.
